We provide specialized dental care services for patients living with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, Down’s Syndrome and other physical, developmental, sensory, behavioural, cognitive, or emotional impairments.

Our primary focus is managing stress and gaining our patient’s trust. Our team has experience and training in caring for patients with special needs, and we have adapted our office environment to be a sensory friendly safe-space.

The First Appointment

We try to keep the first appointment short and positive. Our main goal for the first appointment is communication. We’ll review the patient’s needs, discuss any accommodations that are needed, and develop a treatment plan. We can also help caregivers with tips on how to prepare for appointments and provide after-treatment care.

Auditory Impairments

For patients with auditory impairments or auditory processing disorder we minimize background and environmental noise. We ensure that the patient is able to hear and understand what we are saying.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Familiarity is key for patients living with ASD. To make patients comfortable the team members, examination room, and dental setup will be the same for every appointment.

We try to make appointments short and positive, and we use rewards and reinforcements when and where they are needed. Morning appointments are usually best. Patients are rested and they have the rest of the day to relax and calm down from the appointment.

We’ll review the patient’s medical history to determine the level of support required and any triggers. Using this information, we’ll adapt our treatment and avoid or minimize triggers and other stressors. During treatment, our team wear headlamps instead of using a bright overhead light, and we ensure that instruments are kept out of site. We’ll monitor background noise in the office and we provide a quiet room if it’s needed. Calming background music is available.

We use the “tell-show-do” method during treatment. Before we start a procedure, we’ll explain it step-by-step and encourage the patient to ask questions. During the procedure, we’ll continue to explain what we are doing, and we may use a mirror so the patient can watch if they desire.

Some patients benefit from a desensitizing introductory appointment to help them become comfortable with our office. This appointment can include a tour of the dental office, letting the patient look at the equipment and instruments we may use during their treatment, and a short oral examination.

Cerebral Palsy

For patients with cerebral palsy we provide head and neck supports while they are in the chair. If the patient requires treatment in their wheel chair, we can provide a backboard or head/neck pillows for support.

Our team members will watch for patterns in the patient’s movements and try to blend their own movements around them.

We all want straight teeth, but the reality is that teeth are often crooked or misaligned, or we can have occlusion issues such as overbite. Your genetics or the early growth pattern of your teeth as a child can sometimes result in alignment and bite issues. Left uncorrected, these issues can cause problems to your teeth and jaw later in life.

Fortunately, most alignment and bite issues can be corrected with braces or aligners. At Pringle Creek Dental we offer traditional metal braces and Invisalign invisible aligners.

Braces

Traditional metal braces are attached to your teeth and remain in place for approximately 2 years. During that time we will regularly adjust them to ensure they are guiding your teeth into the correct positions.

Invisalign

Invisalign clear aligners are plastic aligners that fit right over your teeth. They work to realign your teeth in the same way as braces. Once placed on your teeth Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible. They are also removable, so you can remove them to brush or floss, or while you are eating.

You will receive a new set of aligners every 2 weeks for two years. Each new set guides your teeth into a slightly new position, so over time your teeth move to the correct positions.

After you have worn braces or aligners for the treatment period, you may need to wear a retainer as your teeth heal and settle into their new positions.

Dr. Andreea Popescu-Rallis attended the University of Toronto where she completed an Honors Bachelor of Science, specializing in Life Sciences. Continuing at University of Toronto, she completed her Master of Science, focusing in neuroscience. She then pursued her Doctor of Dental Surgery, also at University of Toronto, where she graduated with honors in 2016.

In the last year of her dental studies, Dr. Andreea completed a 2 week elective program in Moose Factory, Weeneebayko General Hospital where she experienced firsthand, the joy of working with patients of need and the experience of living in the isolated local community of aboriginal people.

Dr. Andreea enjoys all aspects of general dentistry including restorations, extractions, root canal therapy, pediatrics, crown and bridge treatments. Her gentle touch and calming personality allow even the most anxious and overwhelming patients to enjoy their experience at the dental office.

She is a member of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario, the Ontario Dental Association, Canadian Dental Association and American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. When away from the office, she loves spending time with her husband, daughter and soon to be, second daughter (joining us in June 2018). She enjoys nature, spending time at the cottage, biking, playing sports and always willing to try something new.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, allows us to provide a light to moderate level of sedation. The gas is administered with a mask and wears off quickly.

Dental emergencies such as broken or lost teeth or a toothache can be distressing. We provide same-day emergency care from our Whitby office. Our emergency services are available to new and existing patients.

Time is of the essence for dental emergencies. Broken or lost teeth can sometimes be restored if you receive care quickly. In such cases, bring the broken tooth to your appointment with you in a container of cold milk.

You can obtain relief from pain with over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen. Cold compresses or ice packs may also offer relief. Take care not to apply the compress directly over the affected area.

Dr. Zahra Damji graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry in 2000. Prior to pursuing a career in dentistry, Dr. Damji completed an Honors Bachelors of Science program with a Major in Life Sciences. Over the years Dr. Zahra Damji has enjoyed providing a variety of dental services ranging from basic restorative dentistry to endodontics, orthodontics and cosmetic procedures. She especially enjoys working with children and has developed a special interest in orthodontics. Dr. Zahra Damji pursued a continuing education program and graduated from the Faculty of Orthodontics Research and Education in 2010. In addition, Dr. Zahra Damji also is certified to provide dental services under light sedation for those nervous patients.

Dr. Zahra Damji is an active member in good standing with the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario, member of the Ontario Dental Association, member of the Abulcasis Dental Alliance of Canada, and attends monthly study group sessions with Toronto Crown and Bridge and Faculty of Orthodontics Study Group.

Although Dr. Zahra Damji’s professional passion is dentistry, her personal passion is her family. She loves to spend time with her husband and two young boys. She loves to travel, is an avid reader and enjoys bike riding in the summer time. One of Dr. Zahra’s long term goals is to serve in a professional capacity in a third world country. Her hope is to travel around the world and help those in need in remote areas of the world where dental services are not readily available.

Dr. Rahim Damji graduated from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry in 2000. Prior to dental school, Dr. Damji pursued an Honours Bachelor of Science Degree also from the University of Toronto. As part of his dental training, Dr. Damji spent two months at the Allegheny General Hospital’s Oral and Maxillofacial Department. Here, he worked with several renowned Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons in a variety of head and neck trauma cases. He subsequently was selected as resident of general dentistry at Sunnybrook Hospital upon graduation from dental school. Through this residency, Dr. Damji received advanced training in Oral Pathology, Oral and Maxillofacial surgery, and gained experience working on severely medically compromised patients. Most notably, Dr. Damji graduated from The Misch International Implant Institute in 2012 and went on to become a fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. Since then, Dr. Damji has gone on to take advanced courses in implantology with Dr. Michael Pikos, utilizing the all-on-four system. In addition to becoming skilled in implantology, Dr. Damji has also participated in advanced soft tissue grafting courses to treat severe periodontal disorders. Most recently, in 2014, Dr. Damji became certified in the administration of IV Moderate Sedation at the University of Toronto and now performs complex dental surgeries under sedation. Dr. Damji currently is the owner of two practices, Markville Dental in Markham and Pringle Creek Dental in Whitby.

Dr. Damji is also actively involved in the dental community serving as the President of the Abulcasis National Dental Alliance. Under Dr. Damji’s leadership, the alliance has provided continuing education conferences, mentorship programs, and has donated dental instruments for dental students in developing countries. Dr. Damji has a deep desire to provide his dental service and education to less fortunate societies in East Africa and Central Asia. Dr. Damji belongs to the Ontario Dental Association and the Toronto Crown and Bridge Study Club.

During his spare time, Dr. Damji loves to spend time with his wife, Dr. Zahra Damji, and his two young boys. Dr. Damji is an avid skier and enjoys playing baseball and hockey.
